The North and Southern Oman



A few days in Muscat relaxing by the sea followed by a brief experience of the Interior of Northern Oman to include Nizwa, the Jebel Akhdar Mountains and the Wahiba Sands. The itinerary offers time in Salalah (southern Oman) to explore the unspoilt beaches with a chance of bird watching, encountering camels and wandering around the Frankincense markets.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1

Afternoon – Oman Air non-stop service to Muscat.

Heathrow Terminal 3.

Day 2

Morning – Arrival in Muscat.

Private transfer to the Al Bustan Palace Hotel.

Day 3

Spent at leisure.

Overnight at Al Bustan Palace hotel.

Day 4

Morning Muscat city tour in a car with a driver, to include the Grand Mosque, Bait al Zubair museum, harbour and Muttrah souq.

Day 5

Check out of the Hotel for a private tour in a 4WD vehicle with an English speaking driver/guide.


The first stop is the Nizwa Souq known for its antiques and silver jewellery. A brief photo stop at the Round Tower Fort. On to Wadi Nakher, located in the depth of a canyon. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route. Visit Misfah a pretty mountain village with stone dwellings still in existence. While heading for Jebel Shams, stop at the terrace farming village of Wadi Ghul. In the Jebel Akhdar range, Jebel Shams the highest peak offers a spectacular view.

Day 6

After breakfast, set off for the Wahiba Sands, a vast mass of undulating sand dunes rising up to 200 metres. In stark contrast to the desert is, Wadi Bani Khalid. The Wadi has clear deep blue water and is a perfect place for a swim and a picnic lunch. Arrival at the Wahiba Sands late afternoon.

Supper, and overnight accommodation at the Desert Nights Resort.

Day 7

Return to Muscat, via Sur boatyard and Wadi Arbayeen.

Check in to the Chedi Hotel.


Day 8

Private transfer to the airport.

Morning – Oman Air to Salalah.

Arrive Salalah.

Private transfer to the Crowne Plaza Hotel.


Day 9

Visit the Biblical “Nabi Ayoub” Prophet Job’s Tomb, perched high up in the “Jebel” (mountains). En route are spectacular views of the plains, mountain landscape and emerald green pastureland. Proceed to Mughsail Beach where “Blow-holes” – (perforations in the limestone rock) through which sea water gushes during high tide. At the nearby bird sanctuary, one may see seasonal birds, Frankincense Trees dot the landscape. Once traded as a commodity more precious than gold, frankincense harvested in Dhofar is rated the best in the world.

Day 10

Visit the fishing village of Taqa, an old town with an interesting castle surrounded by watchtowers and stone houses. Khor Rori creek, is the site of the ruined city of Samhuram, the ancient capital of Arabia’s frankincense trade. Excavations have produced evidence of an ancient city with trade links by sea to the Far East. Mirbat, the ancient capital of Dhofar, was an important port as early as the 9th century, trading in frankincense, horses and slaves. Nearby is one of Dhofar’s best-known historic sites Bin Ali’s Tomb. A twin domed structure; the tomb of Mohamed bin Ali who died in 1135 AD, is a fine example of medieval architecture.

Day 11

Private transfer to the Airport.

Morning – Oman Air to Muscat.

Arrive Muscat.

Afternoon – In transit - Oman Air to London.
